Brilliance represents the universal intelligence

and its source is the sun.

Created when all rays of colour

come together in perfect balance,

it is the light from which all colours spring.

Add a touch of brilliance to any color

and it will become brighter.

Without brilliance there can be no vision.

Brilliance cuts directly through to the truth.

It contains the essence of all qualities,

both positive and negative,

sparkling in the brilliance of perfection.

Brilliance brings a ray of hope to life

when all seems lost.

It can bring change

and allows the delusions of life to dissolve.

With brilliance, old patterns fall away

and are replaced with new ones,

full of joy and uplifting of the spirit.

KAHAYAG, a Brilliance That Brings a Ray of Hope

“What’s going to happen?”

            “Can I continue working?”

“How do I talk to my family?”

“Is there someone who understands… someone I can talk to?”

So many questions, so many fears.

The diagnosis of cancer brings about a number of emotional responses such as fear of life and death, vulnerability, admixture of hopefulness and hopelessness. These responses lead to a lot of psychological and social effects on the patients’ lives.

People who have cancer often find that their needs change because of the disease. Daily tasks may become harder to manage. Feelings can be intense. Even though their needs are greater, it is hard for people with cancer to ask for help. Many people do not know where to look for the help they need.

People who have been through cancer often share a special bond with one another. Sharing what one has been through with others and hearing how they have coped can be a source of strength. These people can be found in support groups.

Recognizing the importance of including psychosocial management in the cancer patient’s care, KAHAYAG Network of Cancer Support Groups was formed in April 2004. It is composed of several cancer support groups in Cebu, each one independent of each other but meet regularly during the activities sponsored by KAHAGym2YAG. The members are cancer patients, survivors, their family members and caregivers, physicians, nurses, psychologists and volunteers. Its vision is meaningful life for cancer patients and their caregivers.

The caregivers or the family members who provide the day-to-day care for some patients are included in the activities. As they care for the patients, they are reminded that they should care for their own needs as well. Patients are guided through the process of creating a plan that is unique for them on how to best fight their cancer, maintain health and improve their life. Patients receive this guidance in an environment that is safe, non-judgmental and supportive as they confront their deepest fears and uncertainties.

Through the regular group activities the members are provided with adequate training and skills in coping with the psychosocial effects of cancer. Grppic2

KAHAYAG is here to remind the patients and their caregivers that they are not alone.

The members do not only share their time, expertise and their stories but SHARE HOPE as well.

Peacefullwarriorsm PEACEFUL WARRIOR

Showed this film to the members of the network of cancer support groups and had a good exchange of views and reflections. We are grateful for this beautiful film which never fails to move me each time I watch it.

Sharing with YOU the plot and some memorable quotes from the movie.

I invite YOU to reflect on them and share if YOU feel like doing it.

Plot Summary: An adaptation of Dan Millman’s beloved book, "Way of the Peaceful Warrior." This word-of-mouth bestseller has inspired millions of men and women of all ages in 33 languages worldwide.

Dan (Scott Mechlowicz), a college student and world-champion athlete, is haunted by the feeling that something is missing from his life. A chance encounter with the enigmatic "Socrates" (Nick Nolte) starts Dan on a spiritual odyssey, which throws his "perfect" but shallow life into total disarray. He eventually discovers a surprising and powerful road to enlightenment and the true meaning of winning.Pwarrior3

MEMORABLE QUOTES:

Socrates: Everyone wants to tell you what to do and what’s good for you. They don’t want you to find your own answers; they want you to believe theirs.
Dan Millman: Let me guess, and you want me to believe yours.
Socrates: No, I want you to stop gathering information from the outside and start gathering it from the inside.

Socrates: People are not theirs thoughts, they think they are, and it brings them all kinds of sadness.

Socrates: Take out the trash. The trash is up here. (pointing to Dan’s head)

Pwarrior1Socrates: There is never nothing going on.

Socrates: The trash is anything that’s keeping you from the only thing that matters, this moment.

Pwarrior2Dan: Am I reading their minds?

Socrates: Maybe you just never really listened to them before.

Socrates: Sometimes you have to lose your mind before you come to your senses.

Joy: [to Dan, touching his chest] I don’t think your leg was the only thing that got broken.

Dan Millman: The journey is what brings us happiness not the destination

Dan Millman: The ones who are hardest to love are usually the ones who need it the most.

Socrates: Those who are the hardest to love need it the most

Socrates: There is only the journey

Socrates: A warrior is not about perfection or victory or invulnerability. He’s about absolute vulnerability.

Socrates: There is no starting or stopping - only doing.

Dan Millman: There are no ordinary moments.

Socrates: It’s the journey, not the destination.

Socrates: There’s no greater purpose than service to others.

Dan Millman: Life has just three rules.
Socrates: And you already know them…
Dan Millman: Paradox, humour, and change.
Socrates: Paradox…
Dan Millman: Life is a mystery. Don’t waste time trying to figure it out.
Socrates: Humour…
Dan Millman: Keep a sense of humour, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure.
Socrates: Change…
Dan Millman: Know that nothing stays the same.

Dan Millman: I took for granted what I could do. I was sloppy with my life; I’m scared but I feel like I got rid of all the old stuff and it was the right thing to do.

Socrates: Death isn’t sad. The sad thing is: most people don’t live at all.

Joy: I know this is a scary moment for you. Are you paying attention to it?

Dan: I don’t know what to do now.

Socrates: First realization of a warrior—not knowing.

Socrates: Emotions are natural, like the passing weather.

Dan: Anger, hatred, violence. They’re really all just fear. Fear then, not money is the root of all evil.

Dan: Chaos theory is correct except that chaos is actually not chaotic at all but perfectly controlled.

Dan: If you lend somebody S20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Socrates: There is no “better”. You will never be better. Same way you’ll never be less than anybody else.

Socrates: Every action has its price and its pleasure. Recognizing both sides, a warrior becomes realistic and responsible for his actions.

Socrates: Everything has a purpose, even this, and it’s up to you to find it.

Socrates: A warrior does not give up what he loves, he finds the love in what he does

Socrates: I call myself a Peaceful Warrior… because the battles we fight are on the inside

Socrates: This moment is the only thing that matters.

Socrates: Where are you?
Dan Millman: Here.
Socrates: What time is it?
Dan Millman: Now.
Socrates: What are you?
Dan Millman: This moment.

The river looks up to the sky

and the sky gazes at the river.

With a silent knowing

that the river becomes the sky

and the sky becomes the river.

And in the eternity of Now, they are ONE.

(a lighted incense inspired me one night and words flowed… about change but no change, impermanence, manifestations, forms, death but no death)

LAVENDER

a flame sparks

fuses into lavender

beauty diffuses

smoke, scent…peace

freedom, joy, love

earth, wind…

Divine.

melt…

ash…

but lavender.

LISTEN

Embrace the Mystery

that the night brings…

and in the midst of its Stillness,

feel a voice

as You listen to Your Own.

Accept it

and love it

without changing.

The words flowed one night as I was meditating myself to sleep and i sensed INNER PEACE… closest to me was my cellphone, than a pen and paper. So i decided to type it, send to a friend and slept.

I was moved in surprise when I got it through text from the same friend after several months or perhaps even a year…coz i didnt even write it down. So now, Im sharing it to YOU through FRIENDSter. I want to share PEACE.

ANGEL VOICE

Soft heavenly music flows through the night

peaceful and calm

Spirit sparks with glorious delight

Unspeakable words pierce the heart

opens up Joy, intense and pure

beautiful sound evokes holiness

slowly….

softly… declines

but the warmth remains

and the smile sustains.

                                          SOUL DANCE

Moving to the deep rhythm of your Being.

                                      “Dancing for God.”

Soul Dance is a kind of expressive meditation. It is a mix of exercise and meditation thereby achieving relaxation and stillness through movement. Expressive meditation is a form of Mind Body Spirit Medicine and can be used as complementary treatment to and prevention of a number of stress-related illnesses, maintenance of health and well-being. I have been practicing expressive meditation through movement or dance.

When I saw a certain documentary film, which talked about the history or trance in different cultures, the use of drums, music, chants and dances in inducing the trance state as well as in prayer rituals, my belief on the benefit of my own practice was validated. In a number of my talks on Mind Body Spirit Medicine and workshops I’ve given, I’ve mentioned this practice of mine. People in the cancer support group that I’m very active on asked me to share and introduce this practice to them. I was inspired to make my own practice of meditative dancing into a certain form of expressive meditation, with some structure and name, then introduce and share it to others.

In my own practice I can use different genres of music but for this creation’s first session, I am using tribal music owing to its origin and my source of inspiration. It is my vision however that this will eventually evolve to include any kind of music depending on the people joining the session.

Soul Dance is essentially simply moving to the deep rhythm of life that is within us all. Each of us has his own unique rhythm, thus nobody else can do your dance, as long as you feel and follow your own rhythm inside. I encourage YOU to focus on that rhythm inside, not on the music, but use the music as an instrument to move you. Letting the music move you instead of moving to the music. If you are comfortable I would highly suggest closing your eyes or keeping them half closed as to limit the distraction from the outside world, thereby really concentrating on what’s happening inside, feeling it and expressing it through movement or dance. I, or whoever may eventually lead the group will talk every once in awhile simply to serve as a guide to the meditation, but if the participant feels that he or she doesn’t need such guidance then they’re free to follow and listen to that voice within, the Soul.

Give an ample space between the other people in the group to allow freer movement and also try to be conscious of the energy of the person next to you that you feel even with your eyes shut. Do not be afraid of hurting each other. Always emit energies of love and gratitude and with this, it’s impossible to hurt one another.

Although there are no rules for this exercise, I divide the session into certain parts, which may change from time to time. The more important rule is to simply feel and effortlessly flow to where the session leads you. With my knowledge and skill on Mind Body Spirit Medicine, I am incorporating some Mind Body Spirit medicine techniques. The first part would be breathing exercise, concentrative and mindfulness meditation. Warm up would be guided by the Body Scan technique, focusing on one body part at a time, both external and internal parts. Feelings of love and gratitude are always infused into the movements. The more active main exercise that follows may also use the Body Scan while focusing on energizing the body parts. Emotional catharsis whether the so-called negative or positive emotions will be incorporated into the dance.

To achieve relaxation and tranquility, the group will be guided to a slower meditative dance. Participants are guided to slowly walk around, still moving or dancing in a meditative way. They are guided to visualize the easy flow of life, free of struggle and haste. Some parts of the music for this phase have faster and stronger beats but people are guided to keep the slow and flowing pace. This serves as an expression of keeping still amidst the seemingly fast paced world.

This is followed by a festive celebration dance of joy, love and gratitude. The leader won’t guide the movement for this part. Participants move and dance in whatever way they want, but they’re encouraged to feel joyful, loved and grateful.

The last part would be a guided group meditative dance. This serves to remind us that although we are individually unique, we are all connected. Participants form a circle, facing the center, noticing each other. The leader will begin with a certain movement, which will be followed by everyone, but as the dance flows, anyone can introduce an action or movement, which will then be followed by everyone. The group will move as One. Before this part begins, a certain intention, prayer or a declaration of something that one asks for will be said. Everyone is encouraged to focus on that intention thereby giving the whole group’s energy to it. The leader will constantly remind the group to focus on such intention.

The session will be ended by words of gratitude. A lot of thank you’s, anything that anyone can think of.

Since I also do the whirling meditation of the Sufis and find it very effective, I may also incorporate a little of it into the session.

Each session will be unique since the most basic influence would be that rhythm inside of us, which constantly changes. The certain parts are just guides but things happen as they happen. The possibilities are endless. It can be a meditation focusing on nature then expressing it through movement. It can be about colors, or about the lyrics of the music that would be used. It can be anything, it can be everything, and it can even be nothing.

My vision for Soul Dance is for it to be meditative yet a fun celebration, a party of a loving community.

Dim lighting would set a meditative mood and people are encouraged to wear comfortable, festive, tribal or party clothes or accessories, instead of gym clothes. These should however not limit their movements, so the most comfortable outfits will be encouraged. Yet a variety of themes can also be done, mostly depending on the music. It can be Indian, Latin, the various kinds of Asian music, techno, trance or electronic, etc. The music and the theme are just instruments, and variations are simply done to avoid monotony and provide excitement to each new session. The most important component of the dance is that rhythm inside, the movement of the Soul.

I do have other tips for this event to be maximally enjoyed. Consider the experience as a dance of a God for God. Dance like you’re dancing alone. Come with the intention of having fun. Do everything with ease and comfort. Don’t struggle, just flow. Try to be conscious of your balance. This can be assured by mostly wide and firm stance. But there are NO RULES for this dance. If you feel like slowing down or stopping feel free to do so. Yet I encourage you to keep moving and keep dancing…. even only in your mind. Feel. Move. Dance. Enjoy. Be the SOUL DANCE.

(I was given the privilege to share the Soul Dance for the first time, last month, with the members and friends of the Kahayag Network of Cancerf Support Groups and some people from Holiday Gym and Spa where it was held…and I Am Grateful.)

Let if flow.

Let it flow…

Let it flow…

Flow…flow…flow.

It is flowing. It is flowing. It is flowing.

A journey.

A language of mystery and splendour. Fast, quick…clear yet enigmatic.

Two, yet One, but Two.

Realization of creation began but did not end.

Intense energy surging…

LISTEN!

I AM GOD!

Overwhelming force, exhausting, consuming, flowing.

Peaceful but puzzling. Peace or fear? Please let me know…

Awareness is sustained yet something greater is overpowering.

Strange but familiar

Separate but One.

TRUTH shall be believed…revealed…and experienced.

Experience, experience…EXPERIENCE!

Difficult, arduous but to yield I must.

So I beg you to listen..

for a mortal It can be lethal

But we must oblige

To a Great Majesty’s declaration

Move in trance, there is no other way

for the energy is extreme, intense and sharp.

So I implore for your ears

Because THIS IS GOD!

The POWER OF INTENT, will, thought..

The minutest beginning of an idea you conceive

Embodies a FORCE that can debilitate

The POWER OF CREATION, oh so amazing

Everything shifts in a snap, in a blink, in a flicker

Everything completed in a snap, in a blink, in a flicker.

I Am a Creator and I Am my Creation

We Are Creators and We Are our Creations

We Are in them and they are in us

Diminutive but infinitely vast

Multitude but One.

The POWER OF THE MOMENT… so familiar, and we call it NOW

But the energy that’s flowing is strangely overpowering

yet be not afraid for you are with GOD

Come closer and feel the surge of His Power

Then feel comfort and not fear

Honor each moment

And truly live it

I dont even ask for gratitude

But simply experience it

So how is it to be GOD?

In the moment, you must be…

then JUST BE.

What are we all afraid of?

Are we afraid of our Power?

Are we afraid of our Greatness?

Are we afraid of The Light?

Are we afraid of Our Light?

Same Light as the Source

Same Light as the Other

The Light that gives Life

And the Light at the end of the tunnel.
